Join us for this fun-packed, creative computing week at Harrogate Ladies' College.
Explore our desert island survival map in Minecraft, can you avoid the creepers? Will you survive the night?
Step into the amazing world of game design, create your own platform games to share with friends & family.
Get your thinking cap on and adventure through coding your own fruit jukebox (yes, you can really make your bananas sing!) or get a leg up with our robotics and (fun)gineering day!

Monday - NewsMaker This workshop enables students to produce their own television news programme whilst practising their writing, speaking and presentation skills. As a group we will produce a news reel programme where each child will produce a section on a topic that is important or special to them.

Tuesday - Robotics Packed with some of our favourite robots - Edison, Lego & Botley. Children will delve into the world of robotics, learning all about pulleys, motors, levers, and sensors along with coding and programming 3 different robots with 3 different coding languages. This workshop is not to be missed!

Wednesday - Micro:bit The pocket sized computer with huge potential. Children will get a real understand of the possibilities of coding and programming with the micro:bit. Throughout the day the children will transform the micro:bit into a digital game of 'Rock, Paper, Scissors,' a light meter that will display images depending on the level of light, a secret message Morse Code machine, and even a fruit jukebox!

Thursday - Computer Game Making! Playing games is great but making them and understanding behind the scenes of game making is the really cool part! During this workshop children will design and build their very own platform computer games that can be shared with friends & family. Children will have control over all elements of the design and look of their game, adding in scenery, sprites (characters), 'baddies' and 'bosses' along with health, gold coins, jewels, the possibilities are endless!

Friday - Minecraft Desert Island Survival! The one we're all waiting for! Our Minecraft Desert Island Survival map sees the children work in collaboration to build a new home on our desert island, encouraging the children to think about sustainability will see them collect materials from our 'shipwreck' in order to start building our village, for the trees we 'break down' we will plant more by collecting saplings. The children will grow their own food, keep their own animals and build their own transportation links. Towards the end of the workshop, we will venture out of our village to explore the abandoned castle for loot... or is it abandoned? We will gear up in Diamond Armour, just incase!

Our October half-term workshop has been designed to offer some real fun for tech-enthusiasts (and those who just want to know a little bit more) while providing a solid foundation in the understanding of creative computing, coding, robotics and game design. The children will work individually, as well as part of smaller or larger groups, reinforcing collaborative skills, problem solving and (often) leadership skills as they bounce off one another to 'debug' their programming, solve their engineering issue, or simply beta test each others games.

Camp notes

Please provide your child with a packed lunch (please refrain from putting any nut products in packed lunches).

Your child will also need appropriate clothing for the weather as we aim to take children outside for short breaks (10-15m) throughout the day with an additional hour break (12-1pm).

Bottled water & fruit (apples, oranges, bananas) will be provided for the children to snack on throughout the day.

If you would like to collect a child early, or there is a specific day your child can only attend half a day, please contact us to arrange and we can ensure to accommodate your child's needs.
